I am thinking of setting aside my old 461 heads in favor of a pair of vortec heads on my 350.What vehicles would make the likeliest donors if I go the salvage yard route? What casting numbers should I look for to make sure they are vortec heads? Thanks in advance, Jerry

I don't know a casting number but the only thing I know they came on is 350's in 96-first part of 99 trucks, tahoe and suburbans. (old body style)
Good luck

You might get lucky and find a pair that's in good shape. They have to be out there. But if they have to be rebuilt, you will be better with just going with a new set from GM.

The casting number should end in "906" or "062" You can tell them from other heads because they will be centerbolt valve covers and only have 4 bolts on the intake side as opposed to the normal 6.

Keep in mind that the Vortecs can be located in the Chevrolet/GMC vans, since these are the only vehicles using the GEN I small block.

Also, there are 2 other Vortec castings (the 059 and 520), which have smaller chambers. These small-chamber Vortecs are used on the 305 due to the 3.736" bore.

Yes - and keep in mind these also have smaller runners too

stick with 906 and 062's - can be had for under $500 new and shipped!

If you go through a lot of hammers each month, I don't think it necessarily means you're a hard worker. It may just mean that you have a lot to learn about proper hammer maintenance. (Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey)
