I need to feel at ease with this install. Here's the question: If the mechanical fuel pump bolts correctly to the block does that mean the rod stayed up and is in the right position? Or if the rod falls down can the pump still be bolted correctly to the block?

If the pump rod slipped down, you would not be able to correctly mount the fuel pump to the block. In order to get the pump in, the rod has to be pushed in, so you must have doen it right.
