I see posts about 8.2 and 8.5 inch and I am not sure of my own. I have a 70 Malibu with axle code CCP which is a 2.73:1 ratio... but what size is it? An 8.5 or something? Thanks.....

I believe most 10 bolts 72 and older were 8.2" and 73 up were 8.5".

I am not sure what size you have. Camaros & Novas had 8.2 inch ring-gears in 1970. In 71, they converted to 8.5in. I'm not sure about Chevelles. My 67 has a 8.2 inch 10 bolt. They are MUCH weaker than the 8.5 10 bolts. An easy way to inspect is to take off the cover & look at the ring-gear bolts. If the head of the bolt needs a 11/16-inch wrench or socket, then it's an 8.5 inch. If 9/16-inch, 8.2-inch. 8.5 gear bolts ar lefthand threads also.
Oh, and the smallest size 8.5-inch 10 bolt was 2.73 so don't count yourself out yet. You never know if someone might have swapped rears either.

OK I have seen a lot of 10 bolt rears and have yet to come across a 72 or earlier with a chevy 8.5 rear. All that I have are 8.2's. If I had to guess yours will be a 8.2.
