According to Chevy High Performance the

overall lenght turbo400 is 28.37"
overall length 770R4 is 30.00"

I would suggest however you get the tranny installed and then take your own measurements.

Pick up the CHP magazine issue may 99 for
further info. That particular month was almost exclusively devoted to chevelles and has alot of very good information in alot of areas of our cars. Hope this helps

Big-Time DITTO!

I wanted to minimize my down-time for the 700-R4 swap, so I just subtracted the length difference from my then current P/G and the 700, and had an aluminum shaft built to that length.

After the swap, the new drive shaft was 1/4" too long.

I double checked the 'As Built' length, and tripple-checked my figures, and everything checked out. the drive-line shop was apologetic, but agreed that you really can't "logic-out" the measurements accurately, but have to measure after the swap.
