Hi guys,
I am doing the drive train in a 66 Chevelle. The engine will be a 502 deluxe. Do you guys have any opinions about which transmission I should use? I was thinking a 700 r4 or a 200r4 but I don't know the difference between the 2. Is one better than the other for my application? Will a stock rebuild handle the torque of the 502? Are there any mods that I have to do the the driveshaft? Transmission mount? Lotsa questions from a newbie!!! Thanks for your input.

The 700R4 is stronger in stock form, but the 2004R can be built stronger. I believe the 2004R is lighter and has a more even gear spread as well.
The 2004R will also be a direct replacement for a PG or a TH350.
You will need to shorten your driveshaft if the transmission you are installing is longer than the previous one. For example: if you put a 700R4 in place of a TH350 then you will need your driveshaft shortened and re-balanced.

I prefer a 200-4R for replacing a Glide or TH350 due to it's easy bolt in as far as size, length, etc..
Neither will handle a BBC in stock from. Do a search, there is a lot of info on the pros/cons of each as well as install notes.

I concur with Jake, even built 700's and 200's won't live too long behind a 502 if you're going to do any serious launches or drag racing.
You need to ask yourself what are you going to use this car for? Do you really want the overdrive? Is it going to be a freeway cruiser?
In my opinion the ultimate "bullet proof" street automatic is a a built TH400 with a Gear Vendors Overdrive tail unit combo. You can romp on that all day long with 3.73 gears and still cruise at 65mph without bringing your engine to a scream.

A "built" 200-4R can take the abuse of a 502 and slicks, etc..
I personally wouldn't use the 700 behind a 502.
However,
I do believe there is a point of diminishing returns. The 200-4R can get expensive.
The 400/GV combo would be OK IMo if the OD ratio was a little better...
A 4L80-E would work well, but is a spendy ordeal. However I think if done right it would be a one time purchase...

Put your mind at ease and your tranny in good hands and go with Gear Vendor Overdrive unit and join the Group purchase effort. See the "Gear Vendors" post in this forum for info. Does it sound like I'm trying to get more people for the group purchase to get lower price for all? I hope so. Seriously, consider a Gear Vendor OD unit. OORAH!!

Thanks for the heads up Bob! I would've missed that one if you hadn't mentioned it! Maybe Wally can stick the post to the top of the list.
