: Clutch chatter

Approximately 8,000 miles ago I installed a rebuilt transmission (thanks Wally), had the flywheel turned and installed a new Borg Warner clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing. Recently the Chevelle has developed some clutch chatter. It seems to be worse when it’s cold. Once things warm up the clutch works smoothly. Everything seems to be tight and there are no oil leaks.

Thanks,
Bubba

I wonder if that flywheel has been resurfaced one to many times??? There is a minimum thickness, don't know the number off the top of my thick head, Mr Bill does since he has a flywheel re-grinder. I'll ask graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I have heard some talk about some bad Hays products, nothing about BW stuff.

I know what it is, all that HP that beast is making graemlins/hurray.gif

Wonder if this has to do with the colder weather we have been having lately?

Mr. Bill is looking, but thinks it's a mute point. If you hack the wheel down to far, the springs from the clutch will come into contact with the bolt heads of the flywheel, very big ugly and a lot more of a problem than chatter.

Possible causes could be one or more of the following.

Hots spots or heat checking on the face of the flywheel.

Bad disk.

Bad pressure head.

Something in the linkage that lets the pressure head go over center which can cause it to stick at high RPM as well.

I'm out of ideas.

Check your motor and tranny mounts. The z-bar setup is in a sort of negative feedback situation (one end of the z-bar is on the frame and the other end is on the engine). As the engine flexes due to load being applied, it moves one end of the z-bar and the clutch rod, which changes how much clutch is applied which affects the load which affects how much the engine moves.

- I like that horse power reason Wally. I might get away with that on one of the younger kids.
- It started happening before the cold weather set in. Although the car hasn’t been acting right ever since it found out it was missing the buttons on it’s front seats.
- The motor is fastened down with a turn buckle so the motor isn’t flexing.

From the responses looks like I should check the trans mount and if that seems OK looks like I’ll be jerking the trans out again to check inside the Lakewood.

Thanks for all the responses,
Bubba

You may have oil, coming from somewhere getting on the clutch disc. Happened to me.
