I've never rebuilt a tranny before but am not afraid to tackle something new. Have a high mileage 700R4 I would like to install in my car...a mild 327 car. How difficult to rebuild one at home?

I plan to get a good manual for the job, but have no clue what I am getting into.

Advice?

As long as you have the tools you need, its not that hard. You have to have a rear clutch spring compressor to get the last piston out of the case, and a general purpose spring compressor. I just rebuild mine, and aside from getting the shift timing down, I feel sucessful. I think i have less than $150 in tools, and all of them are applicable to th350's. I bought both the atsg manual and the haynes manual. $40 well spent, because each have a few different features.

So how much time are we talking and how much cost for a kit...just for a freshening up. I don't want neck snapping shifts, just a little firmness. This is going to be a daily driver.

Thanks for the opinions!

I got a

new reverse input drum $35.00
new x-wide band $21.50
hi perf rebuild kit(friction, seals, gaskets) $94.39
a new pump $79.82
a rebuilt torque convertor $75.00
a .500 boost valve $13.86
a new lockup switch $4.38
transgo reprogramming kit $94.87
new solenoid $12.72
bearing kit $19.95
vette servo $12.94

Total 464.43

I also had to be a universal clutch spring compressor $100, and a rear clutch spring compressor that locks into the case $35.

Do a search on this subject, jakeshoe posted a complete list to build a solid 700r4 a while ago.

Ellis, where did you buy all your parts? I'm particularly interested in the whereabouts of a new pump. Thanks!

Thanks guys...found the post you were referring to, Ellis.

I think i will start with buying a manual and perusing it...then decide whether or not I want to mess with it.

70_FathomBlueMalibu...I saw in an old post that you had bought the video on rebuilding a 700R4. You watched it yet? Worth the cash???

I bought mine from Whatever It Takes transmission parts. They're a national company I believe with about 8 offices around the country. How one wound up in Florence Al beats me. The number is 1-800-940-0197 if you want to call them.

ssbums (name), I've watched the video twice. VERY informative. When I went thru the ATSG manual, I was still a bit scared about trying to rebuild it on my own. When I watched the video hosted by Paul Zank....well, I feel tons better about the whole thing. The only 2 things that concerned me after viewing that was the bushing installation and a couple of the pump modifications.

Still need to grab me a clutch spring compressor, lip seal tool and snap ring pliers. Then I'll begin tearing everything apart and from there decide on what I need to order.
