: posi or not?

When on the lift, if I turned one wheel forward, the opposite wheel would also turn forward by itself, but just barely. Not nearly a 1-to-1 ratio.

I didn't try to have someone else turn the other wheel in the opposite direction.

Does this tell me whether it's posi or not?

I'll be taking the cover off next week, was just curious for now...

Well, if you were turning it, and it is a posi, whichever direction you turn it, the drive shaft should be turning also as long as it is in neutral. If you try to turn it in park, it shouldn't turn at all. If it does turn in park the other wheel will turn backwards cause it is an open diff.

It was in neutral. Didn't notice drive shaft. Thanks.

turn the drive shaft..... if one wheel moves in the oposite direction than the other then its an open rear. if they both go in same direction its a posi...make shure its in neutral to do this.

The ONLY way to be sure is to take the cover off and look at it. I have seen posi rear ends with worn clutches act just like a standard differential and I have seen standard differentials that were damaged act like a posi.

I am with big gear head here. On my 77 K5 Blazer each wheel spun in opposite directions on the stands. But on snow it will spin both tires evenly and the option sheet in the glove box says it should have a posi unit. (G80)

I did this today. Same direction, so I think it's a posi.

Still plan to open it up later this week to confirm, and to count teeth and figure gear ratio.

Thanks.

Good news = rear end is in fact a posi

Bad news = ratio is 2.73.

I guess at some point down the road I'll spring for the $$$ to upgrade to a 3.55 or 3.73....

I have the 3.55 in my 70 velle with a 265/50/15 rear tire. I love it. Good enough gear to get out of the hole, but still drivable on the highway. Want to go to a 295/50/15 next time around.
