: Power Glide Questions
Professor_SS Oct 17th, 03, 6:10 PM I have a 70 velle that i bought from a little old lady a couple of years back. I am finally getting around to start the project and I have an issue to deal with.
The car is a 307 with a glide and factory air that still works. The car only has 48k miles on it. when I purchased it a buddy did me a favor and delievered it on a car dolly he owns.
Unfortunely, it some how ended up in gear (drive) and he pulled it about 30 miles with it spinning the tranny. When he arrived the tranny was smoking. Now the tranny still works a little. If I put it in gear and rev it up to about 2 grand it will slowly move the car and then suddenly "grab" and go in all gears. I have very little experience with auto trannies. This car is being put together as the family "comfort cruiser" since my 72 is not what I would call user (wife) friendly. I am considering attempting to rebuild the power glide and retain it with the 307 or maybe the low poer 350 crate motor.
Do you guys think this glide is worth saving?
How difficult is one to rebuild? (I have a lot of wrench experience, but none on autos)
What kind of things should i look to replace in it and where can I get the parts (kit) and step by step instructions on how to do it.
As always thanks in advance for any/all help guys.
Oldani Motorsports Oct 18th, 03, 8:38 AM Rick, it has likely burned up some bushings and maybe other stuff inside the trans. It is not too hard to take apart and needs very few special tools, just something to compress the reverse and high clutch piston retainer springs. Overhaul kits are pretty cheap, thus I would tell you to get one that has quality materials in it, it will make a difference in life of the trans. If you want to tackle this yourself, maybe the best thing to do is to have you contact me by phone and have a thick notepad and a sharp pencil, lol. You can go to the contact page on my site to see the best times to call. I'd be happy to talk you through it.
Professor_SS Oct 19th, 03, 5:39 PM Thanks guy. I'll try to call later in the week. I am up to it with the start of a new term at work.
Again, thanks,
rick

tedixon Oct 21st, 03, 7:38 PM I think I heard this story before. Did you post this about one year ago? You may have overheated one of the hydro pumps. You may want to consider replacing it with a th350.
By the way, what college is in Hagerstown?
Oldani Motorsports Oct 21st, 03, 8:37 PM Huh? What is 'one of the hydro pumps'? Just wondering... When a 'Glide is towed that far and is not equipped with a rear pump, which only came in the 62-66 ones, there is no lube circuit in operation when it is towed. It would be the same as running an engine with no oil in the pan. Some of the bushings, and possibly some hardparts are likely hurt. If you had been lucky and had an early 'Glide with the rear pump and had it in neutral you would have been fine, as the output shaft drives the rear pump, and even could be used to push start the early 'Glide-equipped cars given enough road speed, lol. Problem was the drive pin for the rear pump drive gear usually sheared off in the output shaft.
Professor_SS Oct 22nd, 03, 8:50 AM I did post this about a year ago and did not get any responce. I also did not get to work on the car for the last year so I just let it drop.
There are 3 and 1/2 colleges in Hagerstown.
Hagerstown Business College
Hagerstown Community College
Frostburg State University Hagerstown campus
and under construction, The university of Maryland western campus.
I hope to save the glide so that I don't have to change all the linkage, the column, etc. Also, the car is so complete that I kinda hoped to leave it clsoe enough to stock that it could be "restored" someday if I decided to do so, or if I ever decided to sell it.
I quess it really doesn't matter, because I am changing it by not replacing the vinyl roof and I'm changing the exterior color, and maybe the interior color, If I keep the 307 I will also go over to HEI and a intake and 4 barrel carb, but I have kept all of the orginal parts I took off it.
This thing slipped into gear apparently, and turned the tranny as it was being towed.

tedixon Oct 22nd, 03, 10:15 AM I thought all the later year PG's had a rear pump. I've been wrong before.
