: Help! Transmission housing cracked

The other day the front u joint let go but didn't go all the way. It never let the driveshaft all the way loose and it never hit the driveshaft loop. I replaced the u joints and went ahead and got a new driveshaft. I noticed after the u joint had come apart there was obviously loud thumping as the drive shaft wobbled around and hit the underside of the car but also I started hearing what sounds almost like a throwout bearing noise. It is a whining type noise when the clutch is out and sitting still. The noise increases if you rev the motor. If you engage the clutch the noise stops. While driving the noise seems to increase with speed. Anyway, tonight I found that both the lower mounting ears that the bolts go through and into the bellhousing are cracked. Crap!! 1) Where do I find a housing for a '70 M22? If it matters it is a 454 car. 2) What is the noise? I went ahead and topped off the transmission oil in case that was the problem but the whining persists. Help! Thanks, Skip

Have the trans housing welded !

If welding is an option that sure sounds like the cheapest but what is the noise? Sure doesn't sound good!

Without hearing the noise, it would most likely be impossible to tell. Maybe it is time for a supercase for the tranny, Wally, our Trans forum moderator could help you there and also perform any repairs to the tranny. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Is this a numbers car or a driver???

A super case would be the best choice, followed by a correct case then a welded case. I can fix one so you can't tell it's been welded, but there is some reason that baby broke the lower ears off the trans, and don't say HP because that won't do it.

No, I don't think HP is the issue(I wish). I'm not sure that the U joint failure didn't jar stuff around to cause the fractures. Or maybe the fractures caused the u joint failure. This is not a numbers car so I have been considering a super case. I did notice that the trans mount/motor mounts/suspension bushings etc appear to be original or at least very old. Maybe that contributed. Before the u joint failure the trans was quiet and shifted great. I wonder what an exchange with a new super case unit would cost.

Straight up purchase of a Super Case M22 with roller first gear, iron midplate, new extension housing and side cover is around $1800.

I stopped dealing in used stuff for the most part, the life of all the used gears out there is unknown and not worth the risk of killing a good numbers case.

You could fix yours with a Super Case and a little TLC and ride for a while a little cheaper.

Email me for a price on the case and other parts if you are interested.
