I am preparing to put a 3.31 or 3.42 ring and pinion in my 12 bolt. Has anyone got any thoughts (good or bad) on which brand of gears, bearings, and set up kits to buy? I am not racing so I want gears that will be quiet but stand up to some occasional street abuse.

Nobody makes a new 3.31, so you are left with the 3.42. I have installed about every brand of gear made and I have not had any real problems with any of them. I like US Gear and Motive Gear. Precision Gear is also good. I recomend an installation kit with Timken bearings and the super shim set. These kits are the best and easiest to work with. If you want more information and prices send me a email.

I can vouch for Freddie Byars. I bought everything from my 12 bolt from him. Excellent stuff, excellent prices and an extremely knowledgeable and friendly guy to work with!

I reccomend Precision gears, I have there 3.42's in the 12 bolt rear on my 72 chevelle they run quiet and I do stomp on it every now and then :D and I have not had any problems, although I now kind of wish I had gone with 3.73's
