I was wondering if anyone out there knew what the GM flywheel numbers would be that will work on my 396. I'm going to run the 11" clutch and have the 621(?) bellhousing already and am going to Pomona this weekend and thought I would look for a flywheel there. Unfortunatley I'm not familiar enough with the flywheels to be able to tell which one is right by looking at them so I thought the only sure way would be to go by the numbers?

For the 11 should be 3998281

Wally,
Is that the only part number that will work? I was under the impression that there were a few to choose from? Is that the best of them?
thanks Lance

That is the one listed as orginal for a 11 inch clutch application. If you can find one in decent shape that has not been resurfaced to death I would be surprised.

Wally,
Sorry maybe I was misleading? I didn't necessarily want it to year correct or an original application part. Just looking for a 168 tooth internally balanced flywheel capable of working with an 11" clutch disc and pressure plate. Resurfacing...Can you measure thickness to tell if it's been surfaced too many times?

Lance,
ANY 14in, 168 tooth flywheel, WITH the bolt pattern near the outer edge of the flywheel circumferance, will work. MAKE DOUBLE SURE IT DOES NOT HAVE THE ADDED WEIGHT ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE FLYWHEEL--------------THAT IS A 454 UNbalanced flywheel. This style flywheel was made from the late 50s into the 80s (until the bolt pattern for the crankshaft changed on 1-piece rear main seals). It was used on everything from pass cars up to big trucks.
Also, beware, there were LOTS of 14in, 168 tooth flywheels which have the bolt pattern for a 10 1/2in clutch. This style flywheel WILL work, and will work just fine---------------but you are limited to using ONLY a 10 1/2 clutch. YOU REALLY SHOULD HAVE AN 11in clutch with a very healthy SB or any BB.
