I have a 69 chevelle malibu and noticed a rear end for sale out of a 70 Chevelle. I have a 10 bolt rear end in my chevelle and was wondering if the 12 bolt out of the 70 would fit. thanks steve

The rear end will work just fine. However, if I'm thinking right guys....he'll need to get the driveshaft slightly shortened, won't he?

It will use a different U-joint to mate the old 10-driveshaft to the 12-bolt rearend.

Of course all that would be moot if you had a 12-bolt driveshaft.

None of the above is a big deal, btw.

I originally had a 10-bolt in my '70 and upgraded to a 12-bolt from a '69 Olds 442.

BTW, if my memory has gone bad on me...anyone can feel free to set me straight.

Good luck on it, 10bolt!

Are you going to change your name to 12bolt?

Ujoint depends on what pinion yoke is on the rear, I have done 10 to 12 bolt swaps with no drive shaft changes or ujoint changes.

Dave, thanks for any clarification.

Now that I remember, I installed the '69 12-bolt rear with my 10-bolt driveshaft and noticed that that there wasn't as much "free play" there. I drove the car and trashed the tranny not too long afterwards. I noticed that the 12-bolt pinion yoke "stuck out" a bit more, which would have put the driveshaft farther into my tranny. It just looked like it might have been a bit too much.

Thanks for the followup, btw.

Fathom Blue,
I noticed you have a rear from an oldsmobile. If you ever buy a part for it, don't tell the parts guy it is for an olds, they will charge more! I was buying spark plugs the other day and the guy behind the counter overheard me telling the kid beside me how my trans am had an olds 403 in it, and he asked if the plugs where for the car I was talking about, and I said yes, and he added 75 cents apiece for the plugs! I asked him about it and he said that "Everything cost more for an oldsmobile!"
By the way, I work with a guy who has a cat named Fathom! Other than the cats, he is pretty cool. He even has a 66 Chevelle (396 clone), but its just sitting there slowly sinking into the ground.

Olds 403? I didn't know Olds made anything besides the 400 and the 455.... ;) tongue.gif

I bet that 403 will make one heckuva paperweight when you put a real engine in there.
