when installing a cooler,is it best to run the lines thru the radiator also ,or just from the tranny to the cooler?
Also,is the best place forthe cooler right in the middle of the rad? and should there be a gap between the cooler and the rad, if so ,how much?
Thanx guys in advance MY 66 (http://comunity.webshots.com/user/onebad66)

Mount in front of the radiator for maximum efficiency, go through the radiator first unless there is a heat issue and if then use a big cooler exclusively of the radiator, and put it close to the radiator, to pull as much airflow past it as possible. If heat is an issue, synthetic trans fluid will usually drop fluid temp in the pan around 20 degrees.

Thanx for the reply Steve.Could you please give me the correct sequence to hook up the cooler into the rad? Also could you please tell me which is the (in) and (out) line on a TH 350? /upper fitting lower fitting.nd how hot is too hot for a trans? mine has a 3300 stall in it so I know it's slipping @65mph. Thanx again for your help

Line coming out the bottom fitting on the trans goes to the top of the radiator. Line from bottom of radiator goes to the aftermarket cooler, then to top fitting of trans after it exits the aftermarket cooler. If you can hold the fluid temp in the pan under 200 you are fine. If you hit the 220 or more area, it will start to harm seals and friction materials.

In today's crossflow radiators, the line at the top of the rad is the return to the trans. The factory installed external coolers are installed so that the fluid runs thru them and then to the rad and then to the trans.

Thanx guys.....Steve you had said that synthetic would lower my temp,if need be,do I have to drain the entire system,or could I just empty the pan,and refill with synth? Thanx again and sorry for all the questions. :)Just want to do it right the first time without tossing $ out the door

If you drop the pan, you'll still have fluid in the converter. The only way to get it all is to have a trans flush done by machine. But, even a 50/50 mix is fine if you don't want to go that route. As for which line is which, I thought on his car it was the style with the cooler on the end tank? 99% of the time it really does not matter as the cooler is non-directional. Some aftermarket ones are directional though, you just need to read the instructions. And, IMO it is silly to run the hot fluid into a cooler first, then into a radiator where engine coolant temp may well be 200 degrees, why would you do that if adding a cooler on? You are only cooling the fluid at the add-on cooler then heating it again. Not a wise idea, but if it is factory-equipped then you have no choice in the matter sometimes.
