I just pulled the stamping 'CHC 053 2 E' from the rear axle tube of my '70 SS. I was aware that the rear gears were much lower than stock (approx 30% speedo error) but cannot find any reference to CHC...any help appreciated. Also - the 'E' looks to have been stamped later, is larger and deeper than the rest of the stamping. WTF?

This is the 71-72 format not 70.
CH= 2.73 posi
C= Chevy Buffalo plant
053= assembled 53rd day of year
2= 2nd work shift
E= Eaton posi

This date format of day numbering started in 71. A 70 with the same date would be Month and Day ( 0222) for Feb 22nd. As well as the Plant is the 3rd letter for 71.The first C in 70 is Chevy and the plant is at the end of the code with B for Buffalo.This would be CCH 0222B code for a 70. The casting date with the year will be small raised lettering on the center section (cover side)Where a Letter for month and numbers for day and last digit of year is used. B151 is Feb 15th 71 for example.

Thanks for the information. I jacked up the car and checked the ratio by comparing driveshaft to tire revolutions. Appears to be a 3.73. Definately posi. Anyone want to swap complete rear housings and/or gears? I want to return the car to original 3.31 positraction.
