I know this has been exhausted before but I would like to know you'lls opinions the m-20 wide ratio has the 2.56 1.91 1.48 1
Muncie M21 close ratio 2.2 1.64 1.28 1
what would be better for a sb car that will be mostly street driven but will be run pretty roughly (18yr. old http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif ) the close ratio sounds better but I don't like that 2.2 first gear especially coming from a 2.47 first. I know the wide ratio has typically been favored but after talking to this one guy he said "even though you won't be able to launch as good it will be better in the end having the gears closer together (b\c of wind resistance)" So in review since I'm sure I confuse some people but let me try to set iron it out? The wide ratio sounds good because of the low first gear. Although the close ratio sounds good because of the fact that as you numerically move through the gears the spacing becomes smaller which in turn helps out with wind resistance. what do you all think? Help me out I am wanting to figure out what would be the right tranny for me so I can make the swap to STICK!! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Unless you are running a 4:10 rear go with the M20.

I would think wind resistance matter much more to the frontal area of the car, not the gears in the transmission. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Likley it is meant that you can keep your RPMs higher through the shifts, such as might be desired in road racing courses.

For streetability, the wide ratio will be the preference for the majority. If you are looking to smoke the tires a few times (on legal track of course http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif ) the lower first gear of the wide ratio will be better.

Although you could get a wide ratio with 4.10 rear gears from the factory, that is getting to the point where the gears could take advantage of the close ratio.

Your final drive ratio (gear ratio in trans) x (rear gear ratio) is a good way to look at it. I overall first gear ratio of 10:1 is pretty fun http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
If you have MS Excel on your computer, download this to play with the numbers: http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/Bowt_Calculator3.xls
Good luck.

S, (name ???)
My 71 had a wide ratio Muncie with 3.73's in it for 25 years. It is being replaced with a Doug Nash 5 speed and 3.31's. I think the wide ratio rear really helps in a heavy car. Gives you a little extra muscle from the start. Never had a problem "smoking" the tires. Ran 12.52's with a basic 1970 LT1 engine with a set of the early angle plug heads and a Z-28 off road cam.
I vote for the M-20
