Greetings,

I'm in the process of a motor swap and tranny change from a 283 with power glide to a 502 with a 6 speed. I was wondering if anyone has done this? What will I need to modify on my 66? Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Scott

Depending on what type of tranny you use, you'll have to do more work. If you are gonna use one out of a newer f-body, plan to cut out most of the tranny tunnel, and re work the crossmember. If I remember correctly it has to be move back and moved down. You should get a weir hot rod products kit that takes care of the bellhousing and hyrdaulic clutch problem. They give you a hyrdaulic throwout bearings with a line, all you need to do is get that coupled to a new master clyinder actuated by your clutch pedal. You'll need to shorten your driveshaft.

If you use a D&D t56 i think you can use mech linkage, everything else is the same.

Scott- I think I've heard that the 502 is a little more involved if you go the mechanical clutch route. I think the clutch "Pivot" ball/stud mounting is a little challenging because of the lack of the mounting hole in the side of the block(??? not sure). I'm finalizing a '95 Camaro T56 install in my '67 396 that had a powerglide in it. Since I didn't have any of the hardware other than the pedals to do the conversion, I went with the Weir bellhousing, throwout & clutch master. I think the hydraulic setup will work just fine, but if I was starting over & had access to all the mechanical clutch hardware & regular bellhousing (& I didn't already have the production '95 Camaro T56 which I did), I would go with one of the new T56's (based on Viper output shaft) that have an adapter plate & input shaft to bolt to the standard bell housing. You probably already know that you can get a unit such as this from Fortes ( I recommend Mike Pell at www.5speedtransmissions.com (http://www.5speedtransmissions.com) ) or other places.
While there, you might take a look at the latest Tremec 5 speed & the ratios it provides. It's considerably less tunnel surgery & still gives you a good highway gear in 5th.

I just finished installing a D&D t-56 in my '67 Velle. I had to cut out the whole tunnel back to the first floor brace and install a new one that was both wider and taller. The stock crossmember from the Powerglide that was in the car worked, but I had to move it back to the last holes and drill two more holes in the frame where the front holes in the crossmember ended up. I also had to cut the mounting pad off and move it down the height of the tranny mount, as the transmission was in the right position with its mounting pad sitting directly on the crossmember. The T-56 that I ordered works with the stock clutch linkage, so that's what I used. So far everything seems like it's going to work but it'll be a while before the car is done and driveable so it's hard to say. Hope that I helped you out.
