Are these easy to rebuild? I understand I need a "clean" area to do this. I have never done a rebuild and would like some clear written instructions. I want to install a performance shift kit too. Is this tricky?

They are kind of hard to because they have a lot more parts than a 3 spd. auto. If you decide to take it on get an ATSG service manual or one from GM & see what you are getting your self into.

how about just the performance kit? Are they easy?

Would also like some advise on transmission coolers, where and how to mount them, torque converter selection, shift kit selection. I have 3.36 rear gears, 200-4R transmission from a boneyard, 355 SBC stock. I want good low end torque, chirping tires, fun driver. This car will not go to the track much, if any.

JM, Look at the "living with 2004" thread. Transfixleo nails it right on with the transgo shift kit and i would look at other items he has written. When getting a trannie cooler "get a biggie" and make sure it has stacked plates, I personally run 2 B&M stacked plate coolers in series to the side of my rad. Remember on a 200 trannie the pressure line is on the upper sooooo on and out to the radiator (lower)then out upper to the external cooler and back to the trannie.
One good this about running it this way is if it gets to cold you can cover up the external and the rad warms it up. Right now in the heat "110+" my trannie runs 170-180 all day long. Good luck

A company called "Technical Video" makes excellent tapes on how to rebuilt transmissions. You can get them through Eastwood and maybe direct. I have the one for the TH350. Very easy to understand, step by step.
