: Edelbrock Water Pumps Suck
LXXVI Sep 24th, 03, 8:45 PM Just a warning to all those with one of the Victor Series Water Pumps from Edelbrock.... I have one of these on my '75 454 (Long) and I recently put a March Serpentine system on it. The Housing for the pump is NOT STOCK!!! The dimentions of it are off so much that the pullies don't line up properly, cause the belt to work it's way off and eventually shred it (the crank to the power steering pump). No matter how I re-positioned it, or shimmed it up, it still wrecked these 30+ dollar belts. So, just a warning.
Ciao!
HOTRODSRJ Sep 24th, 03, 8:56 PM This is true with about every aftermarket water pump on the market today. None of the dimensions match the stock. Even the newer GMPP pumps have differing castings depending on where they are made......so look out there too! Even tho I feel your pain, I don't ever remember seeing anything in the Edelbrock claims of bone stock replacement befitment.
You can grind and CNC the mounting shoulders to whatever spec you want in general on most of these pumps. I know this very well because when we picked water pump compatible with the ConceptOne Pulleys, we had to do some cheating with the TuffStuffs because the pulleys were designed around the Edelbrocks because we thought they had a great product and would be here a long time....which they still are as well as the Tuffstuff guys!
I personally think the Victors are good but pricey. They do pump what they say they will.

The problem is not really with the housing. It is the way they press the pulley flange onto the pump shaft. If yours is to far in towards the engine, it is a simple task to just get a puller and pull it out enough to line up. If it is out too far towards the radiator, all you have to do it remove the back cover of the pump so you can set the impeller flat on the press, and press the flange on further. By the way, I have seen this on many water pumps. I have never used an Edelbrock so it's not just them.
One added comment...if you did not call Edelbrock and let them know, they will never be able to fix the problem. They may not even manufacture the pump themselves. We have to let these guys know when something is not made right, not just bitc* about it here. I bet if you called them they would gladly send you a new pump.
HOTRODSRJ Sep 25th, 03, 5:04 PM WAIT A MINUTE! If you meant and I was too stupid to realise that you mean the pulleys do not line up because the mouting flange is off then different story.
I have put short, long, Corvette short style pumps on from Edelbrock and I assure you that the distance from the front of the block mounting surface and/or to the flange mount is EXACTLY whatever your stock one is. You have either ordered the wrong pump or the pulley is not flush. They are all consistent with these measurements and I have never seen one off. If it is off, then someone has put the wrong shaft in somewhere.
I thought you were having issues with the mounting of the brackets (on the pumps casting) and that is what threw the measurements off.
BillK Sep 25th, 03, 10:10 PM Also,
There is always the possibility that the pulley was made wrong. Have you tried the pump with stock pulleys ? Is it possible that one of the other March pulleys (crankshaft ?) is wrong ? Just trying to think of things that might be causing the problem.
Pause............
I just remembered I had a Stock GM BB pump out in the garage that was on a 396 with March pulleys ! I just measured the distance from the block mounting surface to the front of the pulley flange. It is very very close to 7 3/8" I just did this pretty quick, so it might be +- 1/64" or so, but close enough that you should be able to measure yours to compare. Let us know what you find !
Hope this helps !
Gokou Sep 25th, 03, 11:05 PM My Edelbrock pump was right on the money. Many, many trips up to 7000rpm and never a thrown belt due to pulley misalignment.
(throwing belts due to ATI's crappy tensioner design leading to cracked internal teeth on a Gates XL belt leading to belt failure is another story though.)

BillK Sep 27th, 03, 7:02 PM LX,
So did you measure your pump, or figure out what the problem is so the rest of will know ???????
mikehartwell Sep 29th, 03, 4:35 AM Stewart, Stewart, Stewart. Same money, excellent fit, excellent performance. EB is going the way of the rest of the big aftermarket guys - parts from across the water all made in the same facility with branding being the only difference. Not so with Stewart. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Best,
BillK Sep 30th, 03, 9:08 AM So,
I am still waiting for the verdict ... is it the pump or something else ???????
1966_L78 Oct 2nd, 03, 2:38 PM I had an initial problem with my March pulleys... They work fine now, but the clear coating they put on would no allow the WP pulley to slide all the way on the shaft... I had to remove the clear from inside the pilot hole...
