Anyone knwo what the original temperature rating was? Also, opinions on normal operating temperature range.

You don't specify a year but most were 180º or 192º. Normal is relative but 180º-215º is not out of line. Occasional higher temps like 220º-230º in the heat and traffic are not out of line as long as the temp comes back down to "normal" when you clear the traffic.
