I have never used it, and never had any leaks (at least 8 water pumps)

I hope it wasnt 8 waterpumps on the same car ;) thanks for the quickie respond, I didnt think id need any, I'll pop it back on without goop. Thanks! :D

I don't think it's really needed, but I usually use a thin layer of RTV.(paronoid I guess ;) ) It also helps hold the gaskets in place while putting the pump on. I also use it on the bolt threads that go completely thru the block.

I've always used the old Indian Head shellac gasket cement. Keeps the gaskets in place while getting the pump bolted up. I have an aftermarket AC compressor bracket which the mounting bolts go through, so it's tough to keep the gaskets aligned without the stuff while threading the bolts through the pump and into the block.
