well Mr. Shroom, I would say run 12 volts to your fan. if it spins, theres your answer. dont just rule it out between the fan, or your switch. check yor connectors, termanals, wiering harness. also the resistor pack, which is where you get your high, med, and low speeds.

well aight good deal. thanks for ur help. i was just makin sure i could run 12 volts straight to it without damaging anything. well i'llcheck that first and get back to u thanks a lot.

i checked the fan it is workin. and i checked all the fuses ( i think there are only two right one in the fusebbox and one in the wire between the relays). so what else do i check? i dont know if this is relevant but i can hear what sounds like a vacuum leak comin from behind the controls in the dash. would that effect my motor not comin on? or is is sopposed to make that sound? it could be the resistor or the relay right? so how do i check those? thanks for ur help

it's hard to say without lookin at an electrical diagram. i would ck for power and ground at the connector for the motor, make sure the termanals arnt spred out, and have a snug fit. fallow the wires down to wher the plug into the resistors. make sure you have power going into the resistors. also ck for continuity between each end of the wiering harness. hopefuly you have or can aquier a didgital multi-meter. i'll see what i can dig up and get back to you.

ck for power at the relay aswell.if you got power going to, but not coming out of, try bypassing the rely. if that does it, relays are perty cheap. but then again, thats only in blower high circuit i believe. ill tell you what. if you go to yearone.com, they have wiring diagram manuals for around $9.00 plus shiping, which i think is another $9.00. was for me anyway. but this is most likely one of the most valuable tools you can buy.

81shroom,

I bought a '72 Malibu this summer and my blower seemed not to work also. Here's what fixed mine finally.

I noticed on the firewall near the a/c evaporator box, there was a small line that appeared to be a vacuum hose, but wasn't connected to anything. Wanting to know where it went, I removed the dashpad, and the glovebox to trace out the line. The vacuum hose went directly to the top of the a/c control assembly. I bought a few feet of new hose (cheap) and ran it from a manifold vacuum port to the control head. I started the car and the blower worked fine in all speeds. The vacuum operates a relay that powers all of you a/c and heater controls.

This is also why the car was always putting out heat, even in the summer! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif This is also how I found one section of ducting torn, but duct tape (cheap) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif fixed it, and is never seen by anyone.

I still haven't finished the conversion to R-134a, but that will be done this spring hopefully.

Good Luck!!!
Jim

81shroom,

Forgot to mention that you may have a vacuum cannister that probably looks like a hand grenade on the firewall. Your vacuum will be routed through this. Mine was missing from the car, so I just bypassed it. There may also be a small one-way check valve at the firewall. You should install it so you can "blow" air through it towards the engine. The manifold vacuum will "suck" the air towards the engine.

Your vacuum leak that you're hearing is a good indication that it is a hose leak.

Save up and buy some technical manuals for your car. If you're planning on keeping the car and working on it a lot, then they are a wise investment. Try to get a three book set that includes:
Fisher Body Manual
Factory Service Manual
Factory Assembly Manual

These will show you every nut and bolt on your car, and are year specific. A good Chilton's or Hayne's manual is a great help also. If you are truely an aspiring mechanic, then you will learn the value of help from your peers/elders, and the value of a good technical manual.

Sorry to ramble on...

Jim

no i aprecaite all the time u put into helping me thanks a bunch. i thought the vacuum hose had something to do wit it. i have the service manual and assembly manual. i was reading in the service manual and it said all the controls were run by vacuum (except temp) so i figure if it is stuck in the off position becuase of no vacuum the fan wont run. that was my idea i'm not much of an electrician and all those wires confuse the **** out of me. hahaa. o well i'll learn someday. haha. thanks for the help preciate it.
