I would like to remove the AC Condenser to make room to work on engine in my 1968 SS. Is there any way to remove the condenser without removing the hood and the front passenger fender? Also if I remove the condenser, will the heater still function correctly? The condenser is a working condenser, but I do not have a compressor or the coils installed. When I bought the car there were no coils and there was no compressor, but the guys said that the condenser was in working condition. Thanks for your time to those who respond.

I think what you are referring to in your post is the evaporator core. In your car it is mounted on the firewall and takes up a lot of space. It can be removed without removing the hood and the fender. You will have to remove the fender liner on the passenger side. The blower motor and part of the heat system are in the housing on the firewall. There is an aftermarket source that makes a kit to eliminate the a/c and keep the heat. I am sure someone will post the name of the company here. You might want to switch out the whole system for an aftermarket heat/air conditioner. There are a few companies that make them for your car. The cost of the kit will be around $1000.00. In any case, keep the original a/c parts for the future. You or the next owner may want to change the car back to it's factory appearance and function.

shoot an email to americangraffiti AT aol.com

they make an A/C delete panel that covers the large hole left by the condenser. should be about $150 to your doorstep.

Click here (http://chevelles.com/ads/parts/messages/17301.html) to e-mail them or call them direct. Ask for the 68-72 A/C delete plate. I put one on my 72 and it looks great.

I did this removal on my 69SS. I custom made a cover for the hole in the firewall out of sheet metal and it looks/works fine. There was at least one electrical component to remount (blower resistor) because it was mounted in the big evaporator cover thats now gone. I cut a small hole (maybe 1 x 0.5 inch) in my custom cover to mount the blower resistor ... I had to drill two small holes for mounting screws. I don't believe you have to do anything for the heat to continue working. The systems are separate. I did my work with the hood off and engine out of the car and it was easy. It would be tough with the engine in and the hood on I think. If your engine is in, I would take off the hood and drop the fender well.

I have a 68 chevelle and I would like to remove my evaporator. The engine is out and the hood is off, do I need to remove anything else to get it out? Does anyone have a picture of what it looks like without the evaporator hump?

Thanks,
Brucelee

If you ever decide you want ac I am a vintage air dealer and they sale a sure fit system for your car that uses the factory controls and has a cover for your firewall.the evaporator mounts under the dash.right now I have a GP deal going on for 896.00+shipping for the whole unit.Thats just a thought. You could get rid of the big evap on the firewal and still have heat and a/c.
