I don't know if the water pump is working on my chevelle. I have the cap off and watch the level of anti-freeze rise to the top .The car has reached 185 degrees, but the water comes out the top of the radiator spout. The thermostat was replaced, and no difference. The radiator is clean. Anyone have any ideas?

It's working, let the system cool, put the cap back on and drive it.

I am not sure what exactly your issue is here. Is it that you replaced the thermostat and want to see the water moving or what. When water rises in the radiator and since there is no pressure in the system, the coolant commonly overflows .......especially with RPMS.

Usually if your water pump is going out it will drip out the "Weep Hole" or start making a rattle from the bearing going out. Just run your car with the cap off, You should be able to see it circulate. It won't get all ovet the place since there won't be any pressure build up.
