Wally Dec 9th, 02, 7:11 AM Anybody have a 71 with a Griffen radiator, the big one? If so, what hose did you use on the bottom???

andrewb70 Dec 10th, 02, 11:06 PM Wally,
I have been reading your posts and the trouble that you are having. I do not know if this will help, but I have a BeCool radiator and I just went to Napa and they got me a stock replacement hose for a 72 Chevelle with a BB. The hose slipped on the water pump with no problems. On the radiator the hose was slightly smaller the the outlet, but it slipped on fairly easily after I lubed the inside of the hose with a dab of greese. Have you talked to Griffin? What do they say about this?

Wally Dec 11th, 02, 7:14 AM I have talked to everyone about this, ordered stuff from Ground up and sent it back. What I find is there is so little information that is correct. The radiator outlet is 1 3/4, that is correct, the pump is the same size, most people think it is 2 inch. I have the original radiator for an A/C small block car, it is the same size width wise just thinner than the new one.
I ordered one from these guys, in black.

DaleM Dec 11th, 02, 1:59 PM I got into a discussion with a CoolFlex hose rep and he swears that every BBC he's ever seen has a 2" lower water outlet on the water pump and 1 3/4" is standard for the lower radiator outlet and SBC's are 1 3/4 for both.
Naturally, my BBC lower water pump outlet is 1 3/4". It turns out that the water pump I have (a Summit chrome unit made by a third party of course) has the 1 3/4" water pump outlet. I've had the pump on the car for 15 years so I never gave it any thought. At a couple of recent GoodGuy events, I found a dealer that sold the same pumps today and they are still 1 3/4". As far as the hose itself, I use a simple flex hose ( 1 3/4" both ends) since the ~standard~ formed hose is 1 3/4" x 2". I'm sure if I dug around the racks long enough I could find a formed hose that would fit...but this one works.

Wally Dec 11th, 02, 2:18 PM Well the pump I have is a brand new stage 1 stewart pump and surprise surprise, it's 1 3/4. Even the guys at coolflex think the thing is 2 inch. I can't believe I'm having all this trouble with a damn hose.
BillK has a cousin who works for Jim McKay chevrolet and he has the real deal GM parts books from 1971 and it says the hose is the same on both ends, 1 3/4.

OrrieG Dec 11th, 02, 4:48 PM A good parts counter guy should be able to take the upper diameter, lower diameter and approximate length and find a hose or determine one is not made. The books list not only by application but reverse look up for size. Same is true for most applications.
I once had a guy find a piece that would work between a 59 PU pitman arm and 75 4WD steering arm. Gave him the length, cone diameter at top and bottom and thread size and he came up with a 70 1 Ton truck tierod end that worked.
Head back to NAPA with the diameters and a bent piece of coat hanger for length and curve information.
