I have a 64 Chevelle that has factory air. Years ago I was told there was a leak and I couln't afford to get it fixed. Now I want to go ahead and have it retrofitted for R134a refrigerant. The shop that I called said that first they would retrofit it then they would look for the leak since they have to use the refrigerant to look for it. I just want to know what is involved in a retrofit. ( I recently bought a compressor for the car and the mechanic told me they would install it and put in the necessary changes: oil and other stuff.) Has anyone been satisfied with a retrofit and any tips?I absolutely cannot drive the car without air now that I am used to having air in my other car (where I live 100 degrees F is very common in the summer, a cool day in the summer usually is between 90-95 degrees.)

If you do a search for "R134a" in this and other forums you will find plenty of experiences with conversion that you can use to base a decision on (or just get really confused). Prices seem to range from $30 for a kit to $1000! I think the biggest problem with 134 is keeping the high pressure down, need additional air flow through the condenser. Hope this helps.
