The a/c on my 85 Chevy pick up is full of freon and will cool to 38 degrees at idle on low-normal. The problem is when the engine is revved it heats up to about 60. It will also heat up when I go through a rain storm and then cool back down, it has never done anything but get colder befor. Any ideas?

sounds like it is low to me, have you put a guage set on it yet? It may be freezing up.

What pressures did you have? The system may have air in it and if it does, you may have good pressures, but not enough freon.

Open the hood and run the ac while watching the compressor clutch. You should be able to tell when it engages/disengages. If the suction pressure switch, located on the suction receiver, is working correctly the compressor should cycle on and off. When the cab is warm is should be on more than off. When the cab has cooled off it should be off more than on. If the clutch is not disengaging then the evaporator can quickly ice over. If this is happening you will likely have ice or frost on the suction line also. Check it out, rev the engine and let us know what the clutch is doing.

My dad was doing the checking while I was working on something else so I do not know what the guages read. He has been working on automotive a/c systems for 30 years and this one has him stumped. He is going to talk with some guys at work about it and get back with me this week end. I will post my findings if I find them.
