My water temp sensor is mounted in the head of my 396.Will this show a higher temp than if it were mounted in the intake? I took the car for a run yesterday and the gauge reads 180/185 as I ran down the highway at 70 for 15 miles, but as soon as I exited the highway and ran in traffic for a while it increases to 200. I have dual electric pusher fans(Flexilite 2700cfm) that are adjusted to kick on when my gauge is at 200 and they drop it back down to 185. I have always run just an 18" Flex fan with shroud (which is still on the engine) and have never overheated but last year it would run up to 215 in slow traffic. The car has the stock original radiator, it pulls and pushes plenty of air,and I recently added a new Stewart stage two aluminum water pump with the 180 degree Robertshaw / Stewart modified thermostat (3 3/16 holes drilled in it).I've got plenty of air, high water flow (maybe), but I just don't think it should be running this high.I say maybe on the flow because it seems like the upper hose is building up a lot of pressure. Either my sensor location in the head is not accurate ,I'm assuming the guage is reading higher than actual or it's time for a new radiator! I added the new high flow water pump but maybe the radiator is just gettin tired.Do you think it's the radiator or am I getting higher readings than actual?

This is THE problem with head sensing. You don't know if its a system related issue or just simple heat soaking of the sensing/sensor area.

Go to this thread at Camaros.net. It has the very same issue that was brought up with the appropriate answers.
