Has anyone done this? How difficult of a swap is it? Are the units the same for a '68 and a '70 model?

i went the under-dash unit, i found it cheaper, ezier, and if it needs fixed then it's super ez to remove. almost no cutting and it works great. mine has been in since last summer not a problem yet. got mine from www.oldair.com (http://www.oldair.com) they are local to me and the price was great.

The factory A/C system can be installed on a non A/C car but it's a difficult and time consuming endeavor, after you get all the needed parts. Including the correct crank, fan and power steering pulleys, condenser, evaporator & housing, compressor and mounts, hoses, dryer, inside heat-A/C box with duct, cowl (fresh air) door, recirc door, kick panels, drivers side kick panel block off plate, dash outlets, control head and vacuum hoses, wiring harness, and several other things I can't think of right now. You will also need a section of the firewall from an A/C car (68-72). You will cut out a section of your firewall and weld in the A/C section. You might as well replace the firewall pad while you’re at it. A higher output alternator is needed also.

You will need to get the parts from a 70-72. Some parts will work from a 68 or 69 but to be sure you have the right parts get them all from a 70-72.

You should certainly consider an aftermarket system. As Chev-hell points out. Being a new system and made for R134A, it could easily be the best choice.

I have made the conversion and would do it again but only on a car that I can do without for two or three weeks or longer.
