Reading another post on heater hose size and checking my two cars, I'm in a quandary.

I have a 67 327 Elky with factory air and a 67 396 SS without factory air.

Elky:
5/8" heater hose from intake to bottom bung on heater box
3/4" heater hose from water pump to top bung on heater box

SS396:
5/8" heater hose from water pump to bottom bung on heater box
3/4" heater hose from intake to top bung on heater box

I've had the 67 SS running this way for any number of years but I just got the Elky last fall and haven't replaced hoses yet. It seems the hose sizes and locations are just the opposite between the two cars. Does the A/C make a difference or is that one's a small block and one's a big block? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif

Just a guess, but I would say it probably has to do with the position of the core in the heater box. Generally, you want the hot coolant to go in the bottom of the heater core and come out of the top to completely fill the heater with heated coolant.

I found the problem, my error. Years ago I bought a 90 degree fitting for the intake so that hose didn't have a big arc in it. I figured I'd replace both hoses at the same time not thinking about the sizes. Turns out the new fitting is for a 3/4" hose so I naturally ran the 3/4" hose to the 3/4" bung on the heater core. I also decided to get a new, shinny fitting for the water pump hose and since I'd already used the 3/4" connection, it had to be a 5/8" hose - so that's the size it got.

Just being dumb and not paying attention to what came off where.
