I ran a test on my '68 with the new motor yesterday to see how it did at idle in traffic. The car runs 180 all the time, except in heavy traffic. With a new 28" modine radiator, correct shroud, new waterpump, overflow bottle, and stock 4 blade fan.
The car ran up to 245 in about 15 minutes. She ran fine, but was a bit doggy.
I'd like to replace the fan, I've thought of a 5-7 blade with a clutch or an electric. I'm not nuts on the electric though, since my alternator is the stock one, and I'd like to not have to wire anything else in.
Any thoughts on which cars to look at in the boneyard, or any aftermarket ones? I've read some of the stories on flexfans, so I'm not sold on those.
Thanks!
beleive it or not we used the 5 blade f*@d fan on our race cars and it really helped, but for street a thermal clutch type fan would probably be better. you could probably find one on any 72-up chev at the bone yard.JIMK

With a stock alternator, the electric is not going to work well for you. YEAR ONE sells a repro of the 18" 7 blade fan which uses the thermal clutch and was used in heavy duty applications. It moves a lot of air. The bone yard is an option also just look for the right size and make sure you don't pull one off of a later model car or truck with serpentine belts. You didn't mention if you had a shroud or not, that might help and is available in the aftermarket.

Flex fan technology has changed dramatically in the last 4 years with perfectly good and safe ones that will cool available.
Check out the www.derale.com (http://www.derale.com) for a stainless and chrome biggy! I have a 17" on my 69 that is 400hp + air + Atlanta heat and it does great!

Go to a junk yard and search under the truck hoods. They're much easier to get at too.
Flex fans are pretty good now days but no matter what anyone else says, they eat up horsepower big time. You should try the test sometime.
Go with a good OEM clutch fan set up and learn from others while saving the money..
