Hi,
I have a feeling that the coolant temperature sensor is fualty but how do I test it?? My Haynes manual doesn't say anything about what the resistance should be.
It's an ´87 305.
Another question: There are two plugs in the thermostat housing, one with an electrical wire and one with two small hoses. What are they for??

For the sensor, you can leave your rad open and stick a candy thermometer in it and see what it reads, and compare that to what the guage reads.
As for the housing, one is probably a sender unit, could be for an idiot light, don't know what the little hoses are for.

I could do that but the problem is that the gauge is extremly inaccurate. I can't use it for anything because there's only two numbers on it.
The problem is that it only rises about one degree (you can hardly see it) but since I only just bought the car I don't know what it's supposed to read??

If memory serves me right I believe the 2 hole vacuum fitting is for the EGR valve. It wasn't used until engine coolant temp got high enough to warrant cooling via the EGR. If memory fails me then I apologize. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

If you have a lock up converter, the 2 hoses may be for that. It's a temp controlled vacuum switch. When it heats up, it will allow vacuum through. The one with the wire is probably for the gauge. I have already measured resistance cold on the sender with an Ohm meter, then heated it with a lighter and measured again, looking for a change in resistance.

The sensors for the gauge is on the side of the block. I've unplugged and grounded it to test the gauge itself and it went to max as it should.
Maybe the hoses are for the overdrive?? It's not supposed to use the overdrive when it's cold, is it??

If it's for the tranny, one of the hoses should go to a diaphram that has a wire going to it. Do you have an electronic Qjet or fuel injection? If so, the other sender is probably for the ECU (computer)
