I have a buddy that has a wonderful non AC 70' chevelle. He wants (or is considering) installing an original factory AC unit in the car. My questions are more in the form of your oppions on this: good,bad,hard,crazy,go-for-it,install an after market, have you done this?????? Thanks for any input.

I think that it would be quicker, easier, faster and cheaper to go aftermarket...there's a pretty good size hole in the firewall on a a/c car, that your buddys car doesnt have...aftermarket units are much more self contained and easier to maintain or work on...

I also would go aftermarket unless he wants it to look factory. For factory he will have to hack a sizable hole in the firewall, but it will be covered by the evap box. If he were to do it factory I would buy a complete parts car to make sure he got everything, and could see how it goes together.

Thanks for your input,,some good things to think about. RRob.I agree with you that an aftermarket AC would be easier and not req. the major surg.. drp, he bought a complete org. system that is in excl. condition,,,he is still trying to make up his mind as if it is worth the major cutting /engine pull, BLABLABLA that it would req. to install this puppy.

I am doing exactly that on my 1972 Chevelle. Is a lot of work but when you're done it just looks and runs like the genuine item. Be prepared to work patiently. Get the Factory Service Book.

Good luck!

I did this on a 70 model and I really didn't have any big problems, It just took patience. Like Drptop70ss said, A doner car is almost a necessity for all the parts as well a guide to the exact location of where to mount the evaporator box. You not only have to cut a new air flow hole in the firewall, but have to cover part of the old non a/c hole. Heater core holes are also different and must be punched out. Took me a whole weekend to do just the firewall, ductwork, and dash mods.
