It's not fast but it shoots flames out the tailpipes!
dreinecke Jan 1st, 02, 11:06 AM Derek,
Mine used to do this. I replaced the thermostat. It operates properly now and heats up nice and quick.

elkyD68 Jan 1st, 02, 11:46 AM david,
thanks for the tip. now what exactly does it do (ie how does it effect the heater) and how do i know which one to get. it shows several in my NPD catalogue.
could be that your heater core is getting plugged up too but I would try a new thermostat first
Just go to your local auto parts and get a 195 degree thermostat

Steve S Jan 1st, 02, 8:37 PM If the car is running 180-190 that should be plenty of heat. You will have to do some troubleshooting. Check the seals on the air box on the firewall. Check the air door operation. Verify that it is diverting air over the heater core and not bringing in outside air. Could need an adjustment of the cold/hot cable.

JimN Jan 2nd, 02, 12:35 PM You could try flushing out the heater core by disconnecting both heater hoses and putting a garden hose with LOW pressure over one hose and then switching hoses to reverse flush the heater core. Don't blast the water through the core, it might damage it.
Greg Eacker Jan 2nd, 02, 5:27 PM Agree with Jim and others about the clogged heater core, see it all the time in our shop especially if the beast ever had stop leak stuck in her or because of poor coolant system maintenance in its past life. Do as Jim said, but let me add don't use any chemicals as they might dislodge the crud thats sealing the core and the rest of the sytem, then you'll have no heat and soggy carpet.
elkyD68 Jan 2nd, 02, 6:43 PM definitally don't want any soggy carpet. just fixed that problem.
ok, i changed the thermostat today. but i haven't had it out when its cold yet to give it a good test. i think i'm also going to flush it. i need to replace my heater hoses anyways. somebody did a bad job the last time.
also, the heater has been making some wierd noises when i put it on high. hard to describe it but maybe like there is something stuck in the vent. i check but couldn't see/feel anything. any suggestions on that?
thanks
derek
Greg Eacker Jan 3rd, 02, 6:08 PM Both my 67 and 70 make strange noises at times when the heater blower is on. Its old age, sorta like the noise my knees make when I move too fast. I've learned to live with both of them.
Rainer Jan 3rd, 02, 7:08 PM I was going to suggest a low coolant level as a possible reason as well, but since you swapped in a new 'stat I'll assume you've got the level up where it should be.

Schurkey Jan 3rd, 02, 9:56 PM My '75 Nova and the '88 1/2 4X4 each have a 205 Degree thermostat.
The Nova will roast you out of the car on the highway. On low blower speed, and chilly ambient air conditions, I get 170+ degree air out the vents!
No problem with overheating in the summer. Had those 'stats in for a couple of years.

elkyD68 Jan 4th, 02, 9:58 AM thanks all.
the thermostat does make it hotter, and i guess i'll just have to live with the noises.
