: A/C hose dilema

I restoring a 67 SS 396 with factory air. I've decided to replace the old compressor with a Sanden.

I want to use R12 refrigerant but I can't seem to find the correct hoses. Does any one know where I can buy the old style R12 hose? (The kind that don't require crimped fittings.)

When I asked about using R134 hoses I was told that since my system uses worm drive clamps, R134 hoses would not be an option. They said the clamps don't develop enough force to seal the teflon lined R134 hoses.

I was told it is possible to convert the barbed-type fittings I currently have to the newer crimped fittings but that it would be very expensive and that I wouldn't be happy with the R134 anyway........said it didn't cool very good at all at slow endinge speeds.

Anyway, I sure could use some help in finding the R12 hose.

Thanks,
Sam

Have you checked with vintage Air? They sell most of the bits & pieces for an A/C sytem. They are linked here: http://links.chevelles.net/links/Suppliers/Interior_Detailing/more3.html

Like medical info, a second opinion may be what you need. Try a couple local shops (especially if they make custom hoses) and get a few more opinions. Maybe the first guy did not want to work too hard.

If you are going to use the worm clamps again, the a/c hose should be able to be obtained at a local parts store. If you are going to have the hoses crimped, you may also be able to get that done at a auto parts store that makes hydraulic hoses. R134 is not as bad as people say, you may be able to switch over to the new refrigerant with just a few modifications. The benefits are that the refrigerant is cheaper and easier to find. R12 will be gone soon. You can try this link: Aircondition.com. They have a forum where you can get lots of info.

Thanks guys. I've emailed Vintage with an SOS message......we'll see what happens.

I have a buddy that's putting the new type hose on a 66 SS. He was also told that worm drive clamps would not work but he's trying it anyway. He just did it so the verdict is not in yet.

Based on what I've learned so far, I think I'd be smart to go with R134 due to price and availablity.

If I can't find the old type hose or some "Super Clamps", I guess I'll convert all my fittings to the crimp-on style and be done with it.

Thanks for your input.
