My cable connection is slowing down, it's @ 400- 500 k it was as high as 3000 k I believe that's what it's suppose to be with Charter 3Meg.
It started a while back with not being able to connect unless I turned the power off to the modem then back on.
The Charter guy came out & check the signal said it wasn't perfect but was OK. I was running through 2 splitters a the time with old rg 59 cable(the old standard for cable) so I bypassed 1 splitter & upgraded to the rg 6 digital cable & have have no connection problems now but have a slower speed.
Is there anything I can do besides calling the cable service guy again?

Go here And check also gives recommended tweaks www.2wire.com (http://www.2wire.com)
Click on speed reports at the top.
Might not do Cable if not go here www.dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com)

You should have the max of 1 1gHz splitter(not to be confused with the standard 900 mHz splitter) between the service coming onto your property and your cable modem. Also, the max run of RG-6 from the cable company distribution box to your cable modem should be less than 300 ft. Longer runs should be done with RG11. Mine was longer, so the cable company replaced the cable from the distribution box to my house with RG11 at no charge.

Yea it's possible I have a standard splitter. The cable run is only about 50' as the cable Ped is at the house.

Make sure you splitters are hooked up correctly and only have one hop from the service jack to the modem. I made this mistake before and had too many hops. The next mistake I made was hooking up the cable into the splitter wrong. It is easy to do if you not paying attention. It still worked but horribly. Reset your route if needed as well. It could be your modem but what sites are you testing the down load on. Some areas have set bandwidth for downloads.

What do you mean by {hop}? Splitters are hooked up right. I've tried 3 dif. sights & they range from 330 to 800. I used to get no less than 1500.
I'll prob. have to call Charter & see if there's a prob. along the way.

What I meant by hops was the number of splitters. Each time you split you loose some of the signal. Try running it directly from the service outlet to the modem no splitters anywere and see what happens. If that fails then I would suspect the modem is having issues or the connection line is troubled which both are your cable companies issue. Make sure there isn't a hard reset on the modem. When you unplugged it did you remove the coaxil as well? I have had to do that before but even though I'm sure your brands of modem in not likely the same as mine.

I had been just uplugging the power when I couldn't connect then it would connect as soon as the modem powered up. When I changed the coax I had it unplugged from the power too.

Another thing I have noticed that when I start a download where it shows the speed & time left it will start fast for seconds then slow down.

I would hook it up direclty and make sure you are spyware free run a scan and also a virus scan. If you have something data mining you hard enough it can cause this. See if there is a very small hole on your modem for a hard reset as well.

There is a real small hole on the back below the usb port. It's a SB4101 modem if that helps.

I called Charter today & found out i didn't have the 3meg service but 384K or whatever. I had em set me up with the 3meg & when I do a test here
http://speedtest.mn.charter.com/
it comes in as a 3meg connection speed but if I try other sights it's as slow as 200k. I'm going to have a tech come out again next week to check the line.
BTW I tried it without any splitters & got the same speed. graemlins/sad.gif

I don't know if this will help or not, but my cable was slowing down too. Comcast came out and checked everything. All tests showed good. He replaced the modem, and now it is back to normal. His test and the test from tech both said the modem was OK, but as soon as it was replaced speed was back.

If you can verify 3M speed, then it might just be the bandwidth and traffic of the sites you visit. Try the speed test at www.pcpitstop.com (http://www.pcpitstop.com)

Went PC pitstop & did this.

doesn't mean anything to me but someone might be able to decipher it.

I was thinking more of measuring your download speed here : http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/Bandwidth.asp

Yea I did that, wasn't any better that I reported b4 150 - 280 is the best I get. graemlins/angry.gif

Go to cnet and do a bandwidth test from there.

ok that sucks. It could be a couple of things. First make sure your nework card is good and set to a non auto setting. Sometimes setting them to auto detect causes problems. For example my network is 100 full duplex. If you test your nic out and it passes then I would suspect it is either the router firewall or the modem. If you have a combo unit get it replaced. If you don't I would try another port on the router or even update the firmware/software if possible. Maybe do a task manager and make sure your system is really being pegged by a rogue process.(doubt it but who knows). Another thing you can do is reset the router they usually have a reset on them. If you have a seperate firewall router take it out of the picture and plug in directly to your network card and see how it runs.

Kev now you're talking in language I don't understand.

What I was saying was.

1. do you have more than one computer on your network? If so can you transfer files ok(fast).

2. Do you have a router firewall that the cable modem plugs into and then you into the firewall. If so remove the firewall and go from the modem to your computer directly. See how that works.

3. Hit ctrl alt delete and make sure that there isn't something running using up all your processor.

surely one of these will help you narrow down the problem.

almost forgot how much free space do you have on your computer? I have seen them get to full and run like this since there is nowhere to download the files.

I've got about 30GB left on the drive not a prob. there. Charter claims the prob. is down the line with AT&T, the whole area is said to have a slow connection. I've called and complained, so I'll have to wait & see if anything gets done about it. graemlins/angry.gif
