I've got all the updates for WMV10. I can't seem to get this WMV to download anything by clicking on a link. I have to save the file to my hardrive then view. I've got the proxy setting set to autodetect. Can anyone give me a hand here?

I keep getting this error, even though I followed the suggestion and set my proxy settings to autodetect:

C00D11B3: Encountered a network error
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the Player encountered a network error. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

The server is not available (for example, the server is busy or not online). Try again later.
You are not connected to the local area network (LAN) or to the Internet. Connect to the network or Internet, and then try again.
The proxy server settings for the Player are not configured properly. Verify that your proxy settings are correct, and then try again.
To verify your proxy server settings
On the Tools menu, click Options, click the Network tab, and then verify your settings in the Streaming proxy settings area.
Notes

If you do not know what your proxy server settings should be, on the Network tab, select a protocol, click Configure, and then select Autodetect proxy settings or Use proxy settings of the Web browser (available for HTTP protocol only).
If you are connected to the Internet through a dial-up connection, you might not be able to choose the proxy server. For more information, consult your Internet service provider (ISP) or network administrator.
Error ID = 0xC00D11B3, Condition ID = 0x00000000

Sean, you probably don't have to detect the proxy at all if you have a direct connection with no proxy server in your network. In any event, mine works and my settings look like this (http://members.cox.net/rscott94/chevelle/images/screenshot.jpg):

Just played this link (http://www.edigitalphotos.com/chevelle/videos/540a.mpg) from the tonyr thread.

I have digital cable, so I'll give that setting a try. Thanks for your help!

That didn't work either. I'm at a loss here. This didn't start until i did the big windows xp security patch. now nothing will open in the player, and everything has to be downloaded to the computer. i'm not wondering if it's a setting in my security area of IE.

Could be the patch. SP2 for XP does a lot for security in Windows. For example, it turns on windows firewall, adds a pop-up blocker and other privacy features, etc. Check your settings for the Internet Zone. Mine is set for medium (http://members.cox.net/rscott94/chevelle/images/screenshot2.jpg) :

I have the same problem. Tried a lot of fix's nothing works. I changed my wmv file to mpg and it plays. Very old wmv files will play. Music will play but not video. I have messed with Codes.exe a little but not sure how it's works.

If you can play the .WMV when its on your harddrive, its not a codec problem. If you can stream other videos off the internet from different websites, then its not a proxy/firewall problem. It could very well be the website your trying to stream the video from was causing the problem. IMO, its better to download the video to the hard drive and then watch it anyways.

Thanks great insight.

The only wmv files I try to open and play are those sent to me by e mail. I have put them on my hard drive but they will not play until I change them to mpg. I must have a corrupt file or a missing file.

Or a file association problem, to check, on win98, start, settings, folder options, file types.

I have no experience with XP, another thing you can try ( works on win98 ) is go to a wmv file on you harddrive, hold the shift key and right click, select open with, a box will appear and select windows media player, then click ok and see if it plays, if it does do it again, the box also has a place to check if you always want that type of file (wmv) to be opened with your selected application, (windows media player). Maybe a XP expert will chime in.
