My laptop is taking an extremely long time to boot up and load my desktop. Anything I do takes 15-20 minutes to load , then may run and may not.
I have run virus scan (in safemode) and still have 50% of my hard drive available. No matter what I do, it is barely booting. Idle processes is showing 99% and the other 1 or 2% is task manager. Can someone give me an idea of what may be wrong ? :confused:

Well, I might guess adware/malware -- except that your idle is at 99% (i.e. if it was slow because of that, you'd likely see them).

But -- still worth a shot. I'd certainly run AdAware through to start with...

Adaware is a free program for eliminating spyware.
Go here http://www.lavasoft.de/ on the left side of page you'll see "Resources" and "Downloads" under that. That will take you to the free version download.

Id search for "spybot search and destroy" too. run that too.

It could be spyware. Do the basic things first like defrag and scandisk. Does it take a long time to boot to safe mode? Use msconfig and see how much junk you have listed under the startup tab? If there is a ton uncheck everything exept virus scan software and reboot. See if that helps.

You might also try defragmenting your hard drive. Different versions of Windows have different utilities or commands that'll show what's really running. You can't always tell by the System Idle percentage - your CPU may be quiet, but if the hard drive is working like crazy...either spyware or some process trying to start, it'll be slow. Post your OS (98, ME, W2K, XP Home/Pro, etc.)
