: Network detected but won't connect

I just got home for the Thanksgiving week from college. We had a wire/less router with built in 4-port switch for my brother and mines computer. We already had a cable so his is connected by a cat5 (or maybe cat6 now) cable, since the router and modem is in his room. I use the wireless card in my room, which is one room away. I guess he took the router out when I was gone and went straight from the modem to his computer while I was gone because of some speaker interference and I guess he was having connection problems too. Now, I set everything back up, and it is detecting that we're each actually connected and a wireless network is present (at full strength), but I can not connect to anything and neither can he. When you unplug router we get the 'no connection' thing, and when you plug it back in it brings back the connection, or so it says, but nothing will work. I have service pack 2 and I turned off the firewall for the heck of it. He doesn't have it though. I'm not sure if this matters though because it worked last month when I was here last. Any suggestions? Maybe the router is bad and it needs taken back? Thanks..

I get this problem when the WEP code is incorrect.

What's that? Is it fixable? I'm kind of network-illiterate if the WinXP wizard can't do it.

Actually, if you didn't have it before, you probably don't need to worry about it right now, plus, it wouldn't effect the hard wired PC anyway.

Try this:

Turn your PC's off
Turn the router off
Turn the modem off

Turn your modem on. When all the lights stop flashing, turn the router on. Wait a minute and turn your PC's on.

what Gene said ...
We get the same thing every once in a while when the power "blips" I have to turn the router of and back on and everything is happy.

I knew you guys would come through.

I guess the problem was I was doing that but I kept, to save time (which ended up making things longer) boot the router and the computers up at the same time.

Thanks again..

Sounds crazy but have you rebooted the modem. It may be locked to the mac address of your brothers pc. Shut off modem and router. Plug in modem wait for it to finish initializing then plug in router.
