: Can anyone tell me what's happening?

Been having a couple of problems just in the past hour. When I go to open my car website I get the following two windows pop up. The first one stays for just about a second and then the other comes up in front of the first one. I can't delete them or close them at all. Also not able to scroll or anything on the webpage. System essentially freezes. My only outlet has been to do the "control/alt/delete" thing. No intention of hitting that "OK" button, but maybe there's nothing to worry about with it. Going off line and then back on doesn't help, nor shutting down and rebooting.

I will say that GEOCITIES must have just changed their layout from a corner banner ad to a full "frame" on the side but I really can't see that change forcing some kind of download.

Don't seem to have this problem on other webpages, just the GEOCITIS site for my car below. I did get a couple of general "freeze ups" on other webpages, but none of these pop ups. Do I have an IE problem? If you care to open my car website below to see if you get this stuff then go ahead.

My system is Windows ME and IE 6.0. Use Norton "Internet Security" and did my latest full system scan last Friday.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

When I go to your page, it asks me to install the Chinese language pack. Did you type something in Chinese? :D

Never got that message with this computer Jeff, but it did show up for the first time today on my business computer when I checked the site on it

I would assume there is something triggering the Chinese character set in the HTML, but I couldn't find it in the source. I know there are a lot of people here with better HTML skills than me, so I hope they chime in. Did you recently make a change to the page. Can you roll it back?

Interesting theory Jeff. I actually haven't made any changes to my website in well over a month.

Do you think there would be any harm in clicking that box for "Never download any of these components"? That box only appears for a second before the other pops up so it would be hard to X it that quick. That's what I did on my other computer with the "Chinese" Box and it hasn't come back.

I did the same thing and just said don't show install screen again. I'm not an html expert but it might be something defined in the font or characters. Maybe it is something they added since the source has java entries and side bars on the site. It might not be your page but some attached advertisement or something. Cut and copy your source without the java script to note pad and view it with your web browser see if the chinese language pack down load appears then.

Just opened your site from an XP and W2k system. No problems, no pop ups?

Didn't know there were a couple of other responses here. Did the same thing the other day guys and that Chinese box has not returned, on either of my computers. Thanks.

Another problem has arisen which I assume is just since the Geocities format change as well. It has to do with a <a href target="_blank"> HTML tag on the main page. This tag is only used once on that page for the Photo Gallery "Click Here" link. When I click the link, on either of my computers, the new page opens in a new window which it should. However, the old page also changes to this new link which it should not. Would appreciate knowing if the same thing happens to anybody else who clicks that link. If it happens to others as well then I'll have to try something else. Thanks.

I get http://www.pbase.com/don_lightfoot/chevelle and the main page also changes to the same.

The browser "back button" works on the main page one but not on the new page.

Ya, that's what I was referring to Dean, thanks.

Main page opens fine, click on 'Click Here' picture page opens in same browser session, not a new one. Back button returns to main page. All seems to work fine. Oh, nice car! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Thanks for the check "Finally". As of this morning everything seems to be back to normal. They have removed the "side frame ads" and gone back to a "corner banner ad". Somehow those "frames" they were using were screwing up some of the HTML tags. I sent them an email on this several days ago, never got a response, but maybe they actually listened.
