: .jpg files are now .jpe ???
DaleM Oct 13th, 04, 8:49 PM A few days ago I replaced a primary hard drive with another; one for a larger size and second because of too much spyware stuff I couldn't get rid of. Anyway, used the same XP Pro installation disks and updated all the patches from MS except SP2 (didn't like it anyway).
Problem is now when I try to save a graphic from the Internet, it defaults to a .JPG file type but adds .jpe instead of .jpg to the filename. The .jpe works, but why the sudden change when it never did that before? I've searched in IE6 for a default file setting to no avail. No show stopper, but I'd like the default extension back to .jpg for consistency.
I don't mind hacking the registry if someone knows where the default for IE is found. In almost every occasion where .jpe and .jpg are found, the values are the same. Even in the file type associations in Windows Explorer, the two have identical settings.
What if I just delete the .jpe file association in Windows Explorer File Types?
Appreciate any help.
Dean Oct 13th, 04, 11:02 PM I've been wondering why only one of my computers with windows 98 always defaults to jpe when I save a picture and the other computers don't.
I just change it to jpg.
faulkkev Oct 14th, 04, 1:54 PM Try this? If it is correct it may be the browser. I think technically jpe and jpeg are the same.
Go to start\run and type in Regedit
Once regedits widow appears drill down to this location by click the plus signs in front of items in left pane.
+ HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Then scroll to and click plus sign
+ MIME
Then scroll to and click plus sign and so on
+ Database
+ Content Type
image/jpeg <----- Highlight this folder
In right pane you should see and entry as below
"Extension"=".jpe"
Replace .jpe with jpg by right click and selecting modify, after modify collapse registry by clicking the negative signs in left pane then click file up top and select exit.
Restart system.
Dean Oct 14th, 04, 5:17 PM Well if they are in alphabetical order, which they seem to be, I don't have a "MIME"
I have a "MIM" with no plus sign then a "mip"
I do have "jpe", "jpeg" and "jpg" though
So I assume you are not talking "Windows 98"
{EDIT}
I take that back, I wasn't looking far enough down the list, it's waaaaayyy down there.
THANKS !
Dean Oct 14th, 04, 5:46 PM Hey it worked graemlins/hurray.gif

Man it takes a long time for this thing to reboot :(
Thanks again faulk !
DaleM Oct 14th, 04, 7:34 PM That seemed to do it. Now instead of {filename}.jpe I simply get {filename} to which IE appends .jpg after the file is saved, assuming it was .jpg to begin with. I'd seen that entry when searching for .jpe in the registry but it wasn't the only .jpe entry in there. I wanted another opinion to feel warm and fuzzy. Thanks to Dean for being the tester. <G>
After rebooting one should also clean the IE cache.
Dean Oct 14th, 04, 10:12 PM Yep, you're right, I didn't notice that but it gives me two choices in the white box below, jpg & bmp with jpg being the default.
Sorry, didn't mean to horn in on your thread Dale.
BTW, your site is looking great.
