I have a 60Mb MPEG video file that I'm about to host on the internet. How do I reduce it's quality and size to be more download-friendly?

Any number of encoders are out there.

Very popular these days are DivX and XviD. Microsoft's WMV should be good, too, and most people will already have the ability to play it.

Any of those can get a 25 minute video down to ~120 Megs with good quality. I've got a 2:20 minute clip that is at 19.4 Megs. Also, really good quality so it can be made smaller.

I'll look for links in a minute...

XviD download (http://www.roeder.goe.net/~koepi/xvid.shtml)
DivX download (http://www.divx.com/divx/)
WMV download (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx)

I have those viewers, but no editting type software. I did a few seraches but kept getting random porn links.

But check this out. I was having a problem editting my club's website using FrontPage. They had an online "chat" type help option. Here's how it went... he was a very slow typer!

</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">Rocky: Thank you for contacting iPowerWeb Live Chat. How may I assist you today?
Mike: I can no longer edit the content of www.chevelle-ss.com I am using Microsoft FrontPage.
All I am able to do is view the site within the software, with no saving abilities.
Nothing on my PC has changed, short of a random virus.
Rocky: You mean your site is not working?
Mike: ok, I got it fixed.
Mike: I needed to RE-install the extensions for Front page
Mike: so I could edit the site.
Rocky: Ok May I help you with anything else?
Mike: yeah maybe
Mike: I need to reduce a 60Mb MPEG video file down to about 10Mb. Any ideas?
Mike: you still there?
Mike: 'ey YO Rocky?
Rocky: Yes still here
Rocky: Nope sorry but I can't think of way to reduce a 60mb file to 10 mb
Mike: well alright. You have a good night there Rocky. stay out of trouble.</pre>[/QUOTE]Tim. You ROCK!

Yeah, FrontPage blows. Worked in web hosting tech support for 2 years. Had to reinstall FP extensions all the time.

If you need an editor to encode the file, use this:

VirtualDubMod (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=65889&package_id=63653&release_id=175801)

Using Notepad to type up the HTML and FTPing it to the webserver is free too. smile.gif

Tim. Hmmm. I use FrontPage exclusively on 5 different sites with various hosts and in 5 or 6 years I've had to have the extensions reinstalled maybe twice - and once was my fault for FTPing updates instead of publishing. Since the extensions are based on the server side, maybe the problems you experienced lie with users that FTP instead of publish when extensions are installed.

FrontPage may take more of the host's disk space but updating a site frequently and simply publishing the changed pages saves me the time and effort having to remember what I changed/added/deleted during a session.

I'm sure it was the Host's fault. IPOWERWEB is pretty bad at times. We just had a one day down-time because they where "refreshing" their system(s)...

Still no luck with reducing files. I gave up on Windows Media 9. I got some other free-ware, and it put a Text add in the middle of the damn video!

O'well, one of these weeks.

I use TMPGEnc for most of my encoding. You can use the free version for most things. What format is the current 60MB version encoded in?

- John...

- John... TMPGEnc re-encoding the file using constand bitrate and maybe moving the audio down to mono would help. If you want to change formats, you can get some pretty good compression from OpenDivX (http://www.projectmayo.com/projects/detail.php?projectId=2) for free, or from a good Motion JPEG codec (mjpec) like the one from Morgan (http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/). You'll have to pay for mjpeg encoding (or get a crack), but I think Win 2K and XP both will play those videos back with the built-in media player. Win 9x does not have a free mjpeg codec. :(
