In my office I have two computers. Server with ICS installed and client. When I turn the client machine on it automatically connects to the server and the servers modem dials up and connects to my ISP. I'm in the process of transfering files from server to client so I can use the current client as the server as it's a little better machine with cd burner. The client also has it's own modem installed in it. Even when I dial up using the modem on the client when I press the explorer icon the modem in the server is activated even though the client is already connected. I know this is confusing I hope I've explained it well enough. Appreciate any help. BTW running win 98se on both machines. Thanks Pete

I'm not quite sure I understand, but if your computer is activating a modem that you don't want activated, then there are three places I would investigate. Under My Computer, open Dial Up Networking and see if you have that modem in there. Under Control Panel, Network, same thing. Then under Internet Explorer, go to Tools / Internet Options / Connections and check there too. I'm not 100% sure in this area as I have very little experience here. Hopefully one of the Network guys will read this post.

I've upgraded to W2K, but a couple of places to check. Check under IE options, Connections. See if there is a default dial-up connection selected. See if there is a shortcut to the dial-up connection in any of the Startup folders, both on the client and the server. Does the server have a specific profile for the client or is it only file sharing capabilities?

Sounds like it may be multiple things occuring. Try disabling the modem on the server and saving the profile under a different name. At boot up time for the server, you should be prompted which profile you want to use...select the non-modem one and see what happens with the client.

I have a laptop w/Win98 with multiple profiles depending on which card I have in the PC Card slot. One for a modem, one for a network card, and one for a memory card.

I checked all of the settings in Dial up networking, and all the properties in explorer and and the only dail up is the modem that is in the client computer. I removed all other dail up connections without any luck. Finally went into system configuration utility, selective start up, and found a LQM.exe(I think) which I have no idea what it was. Unchecked it and that fixed the problem. One thing that dawned on me after the fact was I did upgrade to explorer 6.0 and MSN messenger 4.5. I think that was a mistake it appears that they load things that start automatically and run in the back ground. Dale I've got a laptop(IBM 560x) with win95 I'd love to set up to connect via a modem or network card, how do you do it. I'd like to upgrade it to win98se but there are all kinds of downloads IBM recommends and I afraid I'll really screw it up. As you can tell I know just enought to get myself into trouble. Thanks Pete

It's not difficult, just a bit kludgy IMHO, but here's how I did mine.

1. Boot PC normally.
a. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
b. Select the Hardware Profiles tab.
c. Ensure Original Configuration is selected and click the Copy button.
d. In the dialog box, type a configuration name (such as Modem Configuration.
e. Click OK and power down the PC.

2. Install modem card and boot.
a. You should have a choice of which configuration you want to boot to: Original Configuration or Modem Configuration. Select Modem Configuration.
b. Configure the system completely so the modem dials up and connects.
c. Shut the system down again.

3. Boot using the Original Configuration.
a. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
b. Select the Hardware Profiles tab.
c. Ensure Original Configuration is selected and click the Copy button.
d. In the dialog box, type a configuration name (such as LAN Configuration.0
e. Click OK and power down the PC.

4. Install the LAN card and boot using the LAN Configuration profile.
a. Configure your system for the LAN card and ensure you can connect to your LAN.
b. Shut the PC down.

5. Now when you boot, you will have a choice between Original, Modem, and LAN Configurations. Just to be safe, I make sure the correct PC Card is installed before I boot up.

Regarding having both a Modem and LAN connection, in Internet Explorer, you can set up your connection so that it only goes to the modem if the lan connection isn't there, automatically, so depending on which card you have installed, it knows where to go. Also, (I'm not sure about WIN95 on this one), if you "hot-swap" the modem and nic pcmcia cards using the pcmcia manager, the configuration for each card is put into effect automatically. I know that with my laptop at work, if I put a nic pcmcia card in after I'm up and running, it will take me through the network login and map drives etc just as if I had booted up with it installed.
Just something to think about, as I am a firm believer in "if it's not broke, don't fix it", particullary when it comes to other people's computers http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
