i think i might have deleted some stuff i shouldn't have! i lost some program elements ie. exe. files for a file reader. would it hurt to re-install the windows program from the disc that came with the computer? i have a lot of pictures on my hard drive and i'd hate to loose them. i'm running windows 95. on a 180 pentium.

thanks, john...

Reinstalling Windows should not affect any pictures on your hard drive, but anything is possible - remember Murphy's law ? I would consider backing up anything you think is important, including the pictures, before attempting any major change on your computer. Incidentally, there are ways to restore corrupted or deleted Windows files without having to reload the entire program. It may be worth the effort to try that first.

thanks bob, problem is that i'm having trouble even opening some of the files. many of them are associated with the aol program? even if aol is running they won't open. windows quick viewer it the program that used to be associated and worked well. now the exe. is missing from that program and aol has adopted them???? i guess i'm just better with cars than computers. i tried finding that program to reinstall it, no luck. any suggestions?

What kind of disk is it? Does it say restore disk? If it does be very careful, Many restore disks do not reinstall the OS they overlay your hdd with a image of your machine as it came from the factory.

The disk you want is the one that matches your OS.

When I used AOL a few years back, they had an 800 number that you could call for tech help with AOL stuff. I assume that they still do. If the messed up files are AOL related, they will help you. Generally, however, before reloading a program such as AOL, it works better if you de-install it first.
Here's a couple of links to forums that specialize in problems like yours. http://www.virtualdr.com/ http://suggestafix.com/

For windows installed applications you can go to "control panel" and "add and remove programs" then the "windows setup" tab. Each check box represents groups of programs so you can highlight and use the "details" button to find the program you want to add or remove. A word of caution here: If you get rid of a check mark it will uninstall what ever it is so if you uncheck communications you won't get back on the web without reinstalling your modem and dialup connections.

Quick viewer is under accessories and windows is thinking it's already installed so you need to uninstall it, reboot and then go back and install it. You will need what ever disk has windows on it in the CD player for this to work. This should establish the proper association for the data files...
Edit: The advice about the "restore" disk is right on target!!

well i reloaded per your instructions, it went well but the patient is not responding. still can't view the pics. i still think it had somthing to do with the installation of aol release 7. i can view them with another program "compupic 32" so i guess i'll have to settle for that. thanks again for the tip.
