Greetings!

My new PC has a DVD drive with a TV out. Anyone have any info on using this? Does it carry video and audio? What kind of patch cable do I need to plug this into my TV? Is it a signal like an incoming antenna?

Thanks.

What do the output ports look like?

RCA, S-Video or your standard cable jack(there is a name for that thing but I can't remember it.)

Either way it does carry audio and video.

Don't know for sure, but if a DVD has a TV output, I would assume that it would indeed interface with your TV. Just look at your manual, it should give you all the information you need regarding plugs and cable.

Is the TV out option actually on the DVD-drive or is it on your video card?

Usually it's on the video card and will very likely be either composite (yellow RCA jack) or S-Video (black 4-pin jack). Neither of those will carry audio, you'll have to come off of your sound card for that. Some PCs will have three jacks (one for video and two for audio) located somewhere convenient (like the front panel) rather than on those cards in the back.

Coax (standard cable TV connection) will carry both audio and video but that's pretty rare on a PC unless you buy a dedicated TV-tuner card (rather than TV-out).

You'll have to connect the video source directly to your TV, you can't go through a VCR. If you go through a VCR, it will pick up the copy protection signal from the DVD and "scramble" the video between the VCR and the TV.
