just formated my hard drive and get a message at boot up (installing intel ethernet adapter.) then it asks for some files. I skip the files and computer boots ok but, puts Intel PRO/100 VE network connection in yellow in the Device Manager. I remove it but it keeps coming back. Am using 98SE. Thanks Jon

If it's a new machine, it may have an ethernet adapter built in. You didn't mention which MS OS you have but you should be able to disable the device in your profile.

If not, something has the same signature as the Intel adapter. As long as it's yellow in the Device Manager with a question mark, leave it alone.

My favorite is when MS finds an "unknown" device and starts installing drivers for it then asks for the location of the files!

Jon.

What kind of Machine is it? Many clone combo boards (everything built-in) Have these cards built into the System boards, it could be built in but not have the pigtail installed.

I don't mean to offend anyone if I am telling you something u have already checked.

Do you have a cable modem or DSL or neither?

Have you let it install the drivers during boot-up without opting out? Try that and see if it resolves.

I've learned the hard way to be very cautious about skipping drivers on o/s install. What can happen if you miss a file after committing yourself to a device or class install is that your registry can show it as being installed. If you try to uninstall it can crap out. If you're not to far committed to this install you might want to reload from scratch. Let the installer load the files if it sees an adapter on the board.
Do you have a DSL connection?
If after the install is complete and it takes too long on startup, it may be trying to initialize protocols for the nic, and if you don't want that to be the case then you can create a different Hardware Profile. Go: Control panel - System - Hardware Profile. Just copy it and create a new save name.

I just thought of something. Do you have a PCMCIA ethernet card in a slot? Also you might want to check the CMOS to see if there is something there to enable or disable an on-board nic.
