Does anyone know how to have a machine boot up without the Windows 98 screen

I keep hitting the "Esc" key to see what's behind it

This site has a pretty good explaination on the logos and how to change them. http://www.nagarsoft.com/uk/logolib.htm

I just remembered this site; it has lots of Windows tips. http://www.activewin.com/tips/index.shtml

If you have "TweakUI" in your control panel, there will be a section called "Boot" where you can disable the startup splash screen. If you do not have TweakUI, you can get it here (http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp).

I think I misunderstood what you were asking. All you want to do is to disable the Windows 98 boot-up graphic not change it. If that's it, then merely find Msdos.sys in your root directory (usually C:\) and edit it using Wordpad or any other text editor. Under the "Options" part, add in this line:
logo=0
Then save, close your programs, and reboot.
The beginning part of Msdos.sys will look like this:
[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

[Options]
BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.2222

Add in under the [Options] the logo=0 line so that it looks like this:

[Options]
Logo=0
BootMulti=1
BootGUI=1
DoubleBuffer=1
AutoScan=1
WinVer=4.10.2222

And that's it. When you're done doing whatever you want to do and are ready to return it to normal, re-edit Msdos.sys to remove that line.

that did it, no more windows 98 screen for stuff to hide behind
thanks !

I had two Msdos.sys files, one in Windows and one in the root directory, both of which I edited
when I tried to edit the one in c:\ I got "access denied" until I changed the attributes but then it wouldn't let me put the "sys" attribute back so I figured I really messed it up
Anyway it worked fine

Now to get rid of that dang network password pop up thing http://www.chevelles.com/forum/mad.gif

oh, i forgot to say, thanks for the links too !

well I got rid of that too but I did it before I came back and read your "how to"

I finally remembered how I had done it before;
I removed the "client for microsoft networks"
or what ever it was called

trouble is it seems to keep coming back, I guess when this thing locks up, (which is quite often)

Thanks !
