: Video or Monitor Driver?

This is fun stuff.

Last week, my brother-in-law was visiting (he's a huge jackass), wanted to use the email on my wife's computer (was on 'his' desk), I told him that he couldn't (because he's a huge jackass), he got mad, and smashed her new 933mhz computer to pieces. Being the laid-back guy that I am, intead of beating the living hell out of him, I've decided to make his life hell. He's in the service and thinks that he's above the law - I just recently got out of the service and I have plenty of experience on how to get back at him, besides the fact that he has to come back here for court to pay for the computer.

That being said...

I'm trying to get my wife back up and running using my old 266mHz Pentium II, with pieces that were salvageable from her newer computer. The old computer was running Win95.

I was able to use the newer hard drive, which had Win98 on it, but the problem I'm running into is that, with her newer 17" monitor, it only wants to display at 640x480 in 16 colors. I used to be able to display 1280x1024 with that same video card, but a different monitor.

The monitor she's using right now is a Samsung Syncmaster 753DF. I tried going to the Samsung website and downloading a driver for it, but when you install it, it asks for the installation CD. The monitor came with no driver CD, and worked perfectly with her newer computer, with no driver.

The video card I'm using just says 'Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)' in the Device Manager, and the Monitor section says that it's working properly.

I have a Voodoo2 kicking around, but it's my understanding that this is for 3d video only, and won't have any affect on the screen display for 2d? Anything I don't know about that I should tinker with or adjust?

Thanks in advance for any help. This is so aggravating sometimes, especially when it's all because someone can't be a man.

Where it's asking for the installation CD, there should be a button for "Have Disk". Click this button and enter the directory whre you downloaded the driver. Should work.

The monitor isn't the problem... The video driver you're using is "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)" That's not the card you have though. It's a safe default that will run most video cards but is very limited as you have found out. Win98 should support "Super Vga" if you can't figure out what display board you have. You really need to figure that out though. Then you can get online and get the latest driver for the card you have...

Are you using the video card from the 933 as well? If not, since you are using the operating system and its settings from the other computer, you may need to remove the old video driver from the system. Right click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop and select "Properties". Click on "Device Manager" and go to "Display Adapter". You may see the original video card listed with a yellow explanation in front of it. Single click on the listed driver and then click on the "remove" button at the botton of the window, and confirm you want to remove it. Reboot the computer, and hopefully Windows will detect your current vdeo card and have a driver for it. If it does find it, but does not have a driver for it, at least you can write down the name of the card as listed by plug and play and find the current driver online.

Or you could put in the VooDoo card. I have a VooDoo 3000, and it works just fine. The 3D part should just be an added capability in addition to normal 2d stuff.

Thanks for all the replies, it's sure getting me started in the right direction. I tried booting the computer up using the old operating system, and the monitor works fine like that.

The card is a S3 Virge/GX2, so hopefully I can find a driver that will work with Win98. I suppose the driver is on my master reboot CD, but I can't extract it all by itself. What sites do you all use to download drivers? I usually use download.com or driversonline.com

Again, thanks! This is such a great addition to the site.

Try http://www.s3graphics.com/ to find that video driver. That's your problem.

BTW: Voodoo 2 doesn't have 2D support so it won't do you any good.

LedSled.

Do what RickS advised you. Download a file called S3ID.com Run this file from a dos prompt and it will tell u which video driver u need. OR pull the video card an look at the large chip on the card.

There will be a number like 274, 974 on it. That is the video driver you will need. E-mail me everything you have on the chip and I will send you back a link to the driver.

Tim

P.S U shoulda thumped him.
