Hey Guys-
Just some wierd stuff thats been going on for the last couple of weeks. Whenever I come to my computer in the evening or after I wake up I come back to about 8 or 9(sometimes more sometimes a few less) pop up ads all over my screen. Now they aren't popping up while I'm using my computer, they are just coming in out of the blue when my computer is sitting at idle. Our family is constantly connected to the net using a DSL line, my dad leaves it up. Now, these ads are just off the wall offers and stuff(not like geocites or angelfire or porn type popups) just stupid stuff like duffel bags for 10 bucks and stuff. I have no clue where they're coming from and they pop up in IE. I only use IE to browse Team Chevelle and the rest of the time I usually surf the net on Netscape. It has me confused, I kinda thought it might have been the kazaa program but they pop up even if I havent been using that program in my prior session at my computer.
Is this some sort of stupid virus I picked up or something else? Anybody else have this trouble? I've looked through my hard drives and nothing seems out of the ordinary and I havent installed anything since a couple weeks before it began happening and that was just my burner program.
Any thoughts?
Thanks In Advance!

You sure Kazaa is not running? It installs by default to run at startup. Check for a icon in the task bar (by the clock probably in the lower left hand corner) It sounds like kazaa to me. I doubt its a virus because if it was it would be probably be sending you ads for porn... or some shady get rich quick scam..

Ziggy-
I already killed the startup with kazaa in msconfig. I know kazaa stays up even after disconnecting and closing but I always right click and close down in the bottom corner as well. Maybe its just spewing ads, who knows.
Any other ideas?

It's not Kazaa itself but some crap that was installed with it. Check their site to see if there's any info on how to kill it. I don't remember what the article I read said to do.

What the heck is this "Kazaa"? Some clandestine program from Microsoft?

Kazaa is a file sharing site with an installed client (napster-like) for MP3, AVI, etc. It does put lots of ad "stuff" on your PC...

Not Kazaa related but certainly ad related. Check out this thread at DSL reports-

If you have NT/2000, start task manager (go to start, run..., type "taskmgr"). select the second tab (Processes), and kill everything you don't like! Whatever's doing it may not have an icon, but must be an actively running process. There should only be a few that must be running at all times. stuff like explore.exe and the system idle process. But be careful not to nuke anything important, or it's reboot time! And you can safely ignore the warning about system instability if you use winNT.

I'd be very cautious of Lev's suggestion. I can't speak for 2000 but in NT there are some processes that may need to be running when you shut down and restart. If they are not they may not start back up when the computer is booted... You can end task all you want under the Applications tab but if you don't know what it does under the Processes tab I would leave it alone... Also check Event Viewer "applications" under Start/ Programs / Administrative Tools...

Do you have active desktop turned on? If so disable it and see if the stuff goes away!! Also check the Add and Remove for software you didn't load... Stuff like Web Shots likes to sneak stuff into your PC's config also...
