My pc used to shut itself off when I did the "start-shutdown-shutdown" win 98 routine.
For some reason, now the dang thing does a reset when I tell it to shut down.
Any suggestions?

What happens when you do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and select Shutdown ??

Also, just thought of this.... By any chance do you have the Restart button selected in the Shutdown window ??

Click on start click on run, type in "msconfig" and hit enter.

go to advanced and see if there is a check mark next to disable fast shutdown.

Bob: when I do the ctrl-alt-del and select shutdown, it goes thru a reset, just like if I'd used the start-shutdown-shutdown selection. It closes all processes, but then instead of turning off, it reboots.

Tim-no click next to "disable fash shutdown". Should there be one there?

Consider running the Windows System File Check as Matt pointed out in a previous post.

"1. Run the system file checker - SFC. go to Start ----------> Run -----------> type SFC -----------> Enter
2. Run the IE repair tool - Start --------> Settings ----------> Control Panel ----------> Add/Remove Programs -----------> Find IE -------> select Add/Remove -------> select repair -----------> hit Enter

Gene, your link aimed me at a good troubleshooting item.
Although the checkbox for disable fast shutdown was unchecked, the registry entry for it was a "1" instead of "0", so that's why it wouldn't shut off, just reset. Edited the registry, all OK now!
